embarking on a wiki collaboration

I am finding the restrictions on website and more specifically on web 2.0 tools quite difficult to work with at the moment. I understand the need to protect our students. At the same time I believe that blocking sites is not the complete answer.

Of course there are some site whose material is extremely objectionable (not just for students but for adults also) and these should definitely be blocked. There are the other sites which are somewhere in between. In a grey area.

I suggest instead of just blocking the sites lets provide our students with tools they need to be safe online. Let's empower them with knowledge instead of just censorship.

If you haven't noticed the internet is here to stay. Lets learn and teach the rules of engagement. Empower your students to make good choices.

The same way we teach about stranger danger let's do the same for the net.

Hi there - just discovered your blog!

I know my employer Ed Qld will be bringing in social network type linked homepages for students and staff in the next 12 or so months. Still a walled garden, but like you said, a safe zone to learn the tools. Pity its still several years behind tho.
